Benefits of becoming Asia Aware

Street at night with buildings on both sides.

Making changes to become Asia Aware will mean your kura or school is more able to meet its educational obligations to its students and community.

Goal 3 of the National Education Goals (NEGs) highlights the importance of preparing students for the changing world environment:

"Development of the knowledge, understanding and skills needed by New Zealanders to compete successfully in the modern, ever-changing world."

The concept of growing global citizens who embrace diversity is also reflected in the values and vision of both Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and The New Zealand Curriculum. There are also direct benefits for students and kura or school communities to becoming Asia Aware.

An Asia Aware student will:

  • be able to succeed in multicultural and multilingual settings at home and overseas
  • have a well-developed global knowledge
  • have a greater sense of the opportunities open to them both here in New Zealand/Aotearoa and overseas
  • have a stronger sense of their own identity through their international experiences and interactions.

An Asia Aware kura or school community will:

  • be able to provide rich, valuable, and relevant learning opportunities for students through international experiences and interactions
  • be enriched by an environment where students have a stronger sense of identity through their experiences of learning about other cultures.
