Chinese language focus
Mandarin Chinese is one of the world’s most spoken languages, as it is the common language in the People’s Republic of China, and in other Chinese speaking communities around the world. The language focus in this resource aims to give students an initial introduction to some aspects of learning Mandarin Chinese and aims to encourage teachers and students to further explore Chinese language. It is not intended to represent a thorough approach to learning Chinese.
The resource introduces some basic words and phrases with suggested activities and sound and video recordings to help with pronunciation, and provides an introduction to written Chinese. Teachers can adapt the activities to suit the level and learning needs of their students, and the activities can be taught by teachers with no prior experience of Mandarin Chinese.
Schools in New Zealand that are interested in introducing Chinese language more extensively into their teaching and learning programmes can obtain the Hăo! Introduction to Modern Standard Chinese resource free on request.
