Asia:NZ/AFS Educator Awards

The Asia:NZ/AFS Educator Awards provide six scholarships for teachers to spend three weeks in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, or the Philippines. During their stay, the teachers will have the opportunity to experience school and home life in an Asian setting.

Korean Studies Workshop

The workshop is sponsored by Korea Foundation and Korea University in partnership with Asia:NZ Foundation. The workshop is held annually in Seoul, Korea, for approximately 16 days. The workshop is best suited to educators working in areas of the curriculum where Asia is a focus of study. The Korean Studies Workshop provides opportunities for educators to learn about Korea first-hand through a series of university lectures, field trips to sites of historical and contemporary relevance, and personal experiences.

Study Programmes

The Asia:New Zealand Foundation offers grants to assist with the costs of study visits to Asia. New Zealand registered teachers, lecturers and advisers working in areas of the curriculum where Asia is a focus of study may apply, and the study visits must be structured programmes organised by education-affiliated organisations with the aim of providing professional development opportunities for teachers.

Access Asia

Access Asia offers study tours to China, Laos, or Vietnam. These programmes offer unique professional learning experiences focusing on education, contemporary life, traditional culture, and society to support curriculum development in a range of learning areas and contexts.

Professional Development for Teachers of Languages of Year 7–10 Students

This programme is designed to assist teachers to learn/improve their language fluency and language teaching pedagogy. Teachers work towards an internationally recognised qualification in French, German, Chinese, Spanish, or Japanese. Participants study a University of Auckland methodology course (delivered in four 2-day blocks in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch), and are visited in their schools once a term.

ILANZ New Zealand Japan Exchange Programme

International Languages Aotearoa New Zealand (ILANZ) welcomes applications relating to cultural awareness and appreciation between NZ and Japan for this exchange programme from a number of fields including education. There are two application rounds per year in March and October.

Japan Foundation Secondary School Educators’ Tour

Two New Zealand teachers (who are not teachers of Japanese) are offered an educational and cultural tour of Japan, in association with teachers from other countries. The teachers are able to increase their understanding of Japan, and contribute to the goodwill between Japan and New Zealand. Recipients must be NZ citizens, teaching full time with a permanent position. The criteria for selection may vary a little from year to year. Currently they will be likely to be working in a social science area, probably in middle management, and have demonstrated the potential to move into senior management. They should come from schools that teach Japanese, but may not have previously had a lot of contact with Japan, so they can extend their knowledge of Japan into the schools.

Language Immersion Awards for Teachers

The Ministry of Education is offering at least 10 one-month and 12 one-year Ministry of Education Language Immersion Awards (LIAs) in 2008 to language teachers, including teachers of Chinese and Japanese (priority will be given to teachers of Asian languages). Teachers have the opportunity to use the language they teach in real-life contexts and extend proficiency in the target language by hearing and using it in the host country.

New Zealand Japanese Language Teacher's Programme (NZJLTP)

NZJLTP is held annually in Osaka, Japan, for approximately 12–14 days, typically during New Zealand's April school holiday period. NZJLTP is coordinated by Asia:NZ Foundation in partnership with the Kansai New Zealand Centre, Osaka, Japan, and funded by the Orion Programme. The New Zealand Japanese language teacher's programme provides an in-country language and cultural immersion experience for New Zealand teachers of Japanese language.

Japan Foundation Short Course in Japan

ILANZ and the Japan Foundation, represented by the Japanese Information and Cultural Centre offers the opportunity for teachers of Japanese to participate in a two-month training programme in Japan, involving a lecture programme on methodology, Japanese culture and society. There are field trips, home-stay programmes, visits to local schools and cultural demonstrations. There are three programmes available at different times of the year.

Scholarship Programme for New Zealand Teachers of Chinese

The Confucius Institute and the Chinese Language Foundation offers this four-week study programme to prospective and current teachers of Chinese of year 7–10 students.

New Zealand Principals Delegation to China

Sponsored by the Office of Chinese Language Council International, the Confucius Institute organises the New Zealand Principals Delegation to China annually. The trip provides opportunities for principals to learn about China first-hand through visits to Chinese schools, historical and contemporary sites, and meetings with Chinese government officials.
