Invitation to Youth Games and educative value of sport

Level 4 Achievement objective, C2

Students will recognise instances of discrimination and act responsibly to support their own rights and feelings and those of other people.

Learning objectives

Students will:

  • identify characteristics associated with sport
  • describe and demonstrate moral and ethical attitudes and behaviours associated with sport.

Activity 1 – Invitation to the Beijing Youth Olympic Games (YOG) 2008

Visit the Olympic Games website to read the press release about YOG and watch the video of International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge explaining his hopes for the Youth Olympic Games.

Announce to the class that they have been selected to represent a New Zealand voice for the Beijing Youth Olympic Games.

Activity 2 – Moral and ethical basis of sport

Play a highly competitive game suited to the needs of the students in your class.

Play the same game again using Hellison’s social responsibility model.

Activity 3 – Characteristics of sport

Discuss the following characteristics of sport with the students:

  • rule-governed and practised with traditions and customs
  • each sport pursues its own intrinsic goals
  • social interaction
  • rivalry, contest, and competition
  • physical exertion
  • practised with moral and ethical sense.

(Arnold, 1997)

Key questions

  • Why do we have rules?
  • How much can rules ensure fairness and non-discriminatory practice?
  • Should we need rules?

Activity 4 – Olympic Games events-based poll

Students vote on their top four Olympic sports, to be used as the basis for the next lesson.

Notes: Before the next session, prepare four stations based on the top four class choices of Olympic sport. Participation in these stations will be used as prerequisites for obtaining information on the four Olympic Ideals.
