Activities – Saying what you like and don’t like

In this unit, practise saying what you like and don’t like with regard to colours and a few items of Chinese food. Use props to help learning (for example, colour boards and symbols or actual food!).

Possible activities (adapt according to level of students)

Can the students hear the pattern for saying “I like…” “Wŏ xĭhuan …” ?
The pattern for “I dislike…” is “Wŏ bù xĭhuan …”

Use the video clip of colour names to practise and learn the words for colours – students listen and then repeat.

To help memorise the names of colours, students could work in pairs to make flash cards, or colour wheels (circle with colours, and an arrow ‘spinner’ to point to the colour). They can then use their cards or wheels to practise saying the colour words.

Appendix 5

In pairs, students can practise the sentence patterns “I like …” and “I don’t like …”.
As a class or in groups, make a graph to show favourite colours, with students taking turns to say in Chinese which colour they like, and then turning the tally of colours into a bar graph.

Students could draw flags, perhaps to represent some of the countries at the Olympic Games, and label their flag with the Chinese words for the colours.

The pattern for “I dislike…” is “Wŏ bù xĭhuan …”.

The class might like to organise a shared meal, either arranging to cook some Chinese food or to share a takeaway meal.
